National rail network
The Croatian rail network connects all major Croatian cities except Dubrovnik. In addition to regular trains operating in Croatia, “tilting trains” were introduced in 2004, connecting the cities of Zagreb, Split, Rijeka and Osijek. Tilting trains (which run at a speed of 160 km/h) have increased comfort and cut down travel time substantially (Zagreb-Split is now 5.5 hours instead of 9, while Zagreb-Osijek is now 3 hours compared to 4.5 if travelling with regular train services).
Rail is the cheapest connection between the inland and coast. However, rail is not always the fastest or most frequent travel option, so travellers should check timetables carefully and also consider other means of travel.
Tickets can be purchased at ticket sales booths at each railway station. At smaller stations, tickets can be bought only on-board. Discounts on train tickets may be available for early reservations and holders of an ISIC or EURO-26 cards.

International rail connections
Regarding international connections, there are direct lines to Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia and Switzerland. There are indirect lines to almost all other European countries.
